Grand U-Maison — Sculptural-Grade Category

Unicraft's deepest and most architectural wall form.

Most feature walls stop at the ceiling line. Grand U-Maison doesn't stop.

Grand U-Maison is defined by its deepest point: any work whose peak relief exceeds ten inches belongs to this category. But a Grand U-Maison form is rarely ten inches everywhere. Depth rises and falls across the surface the way rock does — full mass where the form needs presence, drawn back to shallow movement elsewhere. At this scale the work stops being a surface treatment and becomes spatial: walls run into ceilings without a junction, openings are carved rather than framed, and a room reads as something excavated rather than something lined. 

An alternative to moulded rockwork

Sculptural rock interiors are conventionally built as GRC or GRG panels: forms cast off site from moulds, delivered, and fixed to a frame. It is a proven method, and it carries the constraints of any moulded system. The mould defines the form, so the shapes repeat. The panels meet in joints that raking light will find. And because the casting happens before the panel reaches site, the composition cannot answer to the room it ends up in.

Grand U-Maison is sculpted in place. There is no mould, no module, and no joint line — which is why a form can turn a corner, climb a wall, cross a ceiling, and come back down again as a single continuous mass.

Walls and ceilings as one form

The clearest expression of this category is a room where the ceiling is not a separate surface. In a private dining room, the sculpted form runs unbroken from floor level up and across overhead, closing the space into a single enclosure. There is no cornice, no shadow gap, and no line where one trade is handed over to another. The effect is immediate and difficult to achieve any other way: guests register that they are inside something, rather than inside a room that has been decorated.

Lighting carved into the form

Because the form is built rather than applied, lighting is designed into it from the start. Openings are shaped as part of the sculpture — an organic aperture set into a ceiling, a recessed pocket that throws light across a stratified face, a slot that grazes the surface to bring out its layering. The light fitting disappears; what remains is a lit opening in rock. This is specified at design stage together with the lighting consultant, not resolved afterwards.

Freestanding forms, portals and counters

Grand U-Maison is not limited to what is already there. The category covers portals and archways that frame an entrance, columns absorbed into sculpted mass, reception and host counters formed as part of the surrounding rock, and freestanding volumes that stand clear of any wall. In retail and F&B, this is often what makes a tenancy legible from across a mall floor — the entrance itself becomes the identity.

Specified where the space has scale to give

Ten inches of relief needs room to be read. This is work for double-volume lobbies, restaurant interiors, mall entrances, showrooms and gallery spaces — where height and viewing distance let a sculpted form resolve, and where the depth reads as generosity rather than intrusion. In residential projects it belongs in entrance voids and double-height living spaces rather than standard rooms; below a certain scale, a form this deep will dominate rather than anchor. Most textured wall finishes available in Malaysia sit flat against the surface. U-Atelier is built out from it — a hand-applied mineral plaster feature wall with a sculptural relief depth of three to six inches, giving the wall genuine shadow, physical depth, and a surface that changes appearance as daylight moves across the room.

Where Grand U-Maison commands immediate visual drama, U-Atelier is Unicraft's most refined and nuanced texture work — and deliberately the least prescriptive.

Previously, each of our wall finishes carried a fixed name and a fixed form: Archipelago, Nuvola, Geometria. Each was well defined, and each was, by definition, a limit. U-Atelier replaces that system. Instead of selecting a pre-set pattern, the client describes the effect they want, and our wall artisans build it — forming the relief on site and finishing it in the same mineral-based surface system used across the Unicraft range, to produce anything from soft, seamless tonal drifts to defined, sculptural geometry. 

What a custom textured feature wall actually involves

Every U-Atelier wall is formed and finished by hand on site. There are no panels, no repeating modules, and no joint lines — the relief is built into the wall itself, then worked against the actual room and the actual light. Which is why the same brief produces a different wall in a north-facing bedroom than it does in a double-volume lobby. 

Colour options for mineral plaster walls

Black, charcoal grey, white and beige remain the most frequently specified tones, largely because they let the shadow do the work. That said, the material is pigmented to order — if you have a specific tone in mind, we colour-match during consultation and produce a sample panel for approval before any work begins on the wall itself.

3. STARLIGHT — IRIDESCENT FEATURE WALL FINISH FOR PRIVATE DINING, VIP ROOMS & LUXURY LOUNGES 

Starlight — Light-Reflective Mineral Finish

• Colour: Black. The crystals define the palette, and the black ground is what allows the iridescence to read

Gold leaf comes in squares. Starlight doesn't.

Starlight is built on a deep black ground, with fine reflective mineral crystals suspended inside the surface rather than scattered across the top of it. Against black, the crystals read at full strength — blue, violet and green surfacing and disappearing as the light angle shifts. It is the most specialised finish we produce, and the one we reserve for the rooms that matter most in a project.

An alternative to metal leaf

Metal leaf has long been the default where a hospitality interior needs a wall to hold light — particularly in Japanese and high-end dining rooms. It works, but it carries constraints: the leaf is laid in individual squares, so the grid of overlaps is visible at close range; the palette is limited to gold, silver and copper; and the surface is soft, delicate to clean, and easily marked once installed.

Starlight is applied as a continuous hand-worked surface. There is no leaf grid, no repeat, and no seam. The reflective crystals are exceptionally hard, and the shimmer is a property of the crystal itself rather than a soft metallic layer sitting on top — which is why the finish holds its appearance through years of commercial service rather than requiring the care a leafed wall demands.

A finish, not a fixed form

Starlight is the one surface in the Unicraft range that isn't tied to a thickness. It is a finishing layer, and it can be applied over any of our textures — a flat wall, a lightly worked surface, or a full U-Atelier sculptural relief at three to six inches. Laid over a flat plane it reads as a single field of black holding light. Laid over relief, every ridge and hollow catches differently, and the wall becomes a piece of shifting geology. The base texture is specified first; Starlight is what goes on top of it.

Built for close viewing

Starlight is at its strongest where people are seated, unhurried, and close to the wall. At an omakase counter or in a private dining room, guests face the same surface for two or three hours — long enough for a flat finish to disappear from notice entirely. Starlight doesn't settle. As candles are lit, as pendant lighting is dimmed through service, as diners shift in their seats, different crystals catch and release the light. The wall stays quietly alive for the length of the meal.

Reserved for the rooms that matter

Every project has spaces that carry more weight than the rest of the floor plan — the room where the important guest is seated, the counter where the chef works in front of an audience, the lounge reserved for members, the suite that anchors the hotel's rate card. Starlight is made for those rooms. It is a hand-built finish using specialised material, and it is specified where the surface is small, the lighting is considered, and everyone in the room is close enough to see the work.

4. AGATA — SEAMLESS STONE-EFFECT WALL FINISH FOR LARGE FEATURE WALLS 

Agata — Layered Stone-Effect Mineral Finish

• Key Characteristic: Continuous veined stone movement across the full wall, with no slab joints or repeat lines 

• Material: Unicraft's proprietary mineral-based system, hand-applied and pigmented in-house 

• Applied Thickness: Under 5mm — applies directly over existing wall surfaces with negligible build-up 

• Pattern: A defined Unicraft pattern language — consistent in character across every Agata wall, individual in how it runs on each 

• Colour: Natural agate tones — warm beige, cream, sand and soft grey. Agata is specified within this palette; for projects requiring custom colour direction, U-Atelier is the finish built for it

A stone slab wall has joints. Agata doesn't.

Named after the agate mineral, Agata reproduces the layered veining and geological movement of a natural stone cross-section — but built by hand, in a proprietary mineral-based system applied directly onto the wall. Because it is applied rather than mounted, the pattern runs continuously across the entire surface. There are no slab edges, no repeat lines, and no seams to design around.

An alternative to stone slab cladding

Large-format marble, onyx and agate slabs deliver the look, but they bring a substantial wall build-up, mounting structure, weight loading, and visible joints wherever one panel meets the next. Agata is applied at under 5mm. It goes over existing plastered walls without a supporting frame, without eating into floor area, and without forcing door frames, skirting or ceiling details to be reworked around it. For renovation projects in particular — where the wall build-up is often the constraint rather than the budget — this is the practical route to the same visual result.

Consistent in character, individual in run

Agata is a defined finish, not an open brief — every Agata wall shares the same material build and the same visual language, so the finish is recognisable and specifiable across projects. What differs is how the veining travels. Because each wall is worked by hand against its own dimensions, the banding finds a different route every time. Two Agata walls in the same building will read as the same finish; they will not be identical panels.

Built for large surfaces

Agata's movement is composed at the scale of the wall rather than at the scale of a sample panel, which is why it is at its strongest across broad, uninterrupted surfaces: full living room and TV feature walls, lobby and reception backdrops, staircase walls, and showroom interiors. On a small niche the composition has nowhere to develop; given a full wall, it reads as a single continuous geological formation.

The agate palette

Agata is specified within the tonal range of the mineral it takes its name from: warm beige, cream, sand and soft grey, moving through one another the way banding runs through a natural agate cross-section. Holding to that range is what keeps the finish reading as stone rather than as a coloured wall — it is a deliberate part of how Agata is defined. Where a project calls for a different colour direction, U-Atelier is the finish built to take it.
